The Bayanihan Linux 5 Revision 4 is now available for download! The newest Kalumbata revision now features LibreOffice by The Document Foundation, an Open Source office productivity suite greatly derived from OpenOffice.org. However, OpenOffice.org 3.3, the latest version, is still bundled in the installer. Also packed in the new ISOs is the latest release of BL5's default web browser, Mozilla Firefox 4. Tons of security updates are also added.

For old BL users, software updates can be downloaded via Synaptic. Just follow the easy steps below:

  1. Open Synaptic Package Manager (Menu > System > Package Manager). Enter the root password.
  2. Before proceeding, make sure that the Kalumbata repository is enabled. To do this, go to Settings under the menu bar, and select Repositories. Check the box beside http://apt.bayanihan.gov.ph/kalumbata and click OK.
  3. Click the Reload icon found at the upper left part of the Synaptic window.
  4. After checking the repository for new, removed, or updated software packages, click the Search button (the last icon at the toolbar) and type the software to be updated.
  5. If there is an update on the software you searched, right-click on the item/s and select "Mark for Upgrade".
  6. On the resulting dialog box, click Mark.
  7. Then, click the Apply button at the main toolbar.
  8. The selected software will then be upgraded to its newest version.

Bayanihan Linux 5 Rev 4 can be downloaded here for free. For more information or inquiries, email us at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Bayanihan Linux celebrated Software Freedom Day 2010 together with the other 500 teams in 100 different countries worldwide.

The DOST-ASTI Bayanihan Linux Team participated in the program organized by the Bluepoint Linux Users Elite (BLUE) in cooperation with the Ateneo de Manila University Department of Information Systems and Computer Science (DISCS) and Bluepoint Foundation at Leong Hall Auditorium, Ateneo de Manila University last September 18, 2010. A total of 34 FOSS advocacy groups nationwide organized a celebration for SFD 2010.

The BL team was present in the event to promote the use of Bayanihan Linux, which utilizes free and open source software completely in its system. Information dissemination about Bayanihan Linux and other ASTI projects were done by giving away brochures and Bayanihan installers. The team members gave technical support to interested participants and BL merchandise were also sold during the event. Moreover, Mr. Bayani Benjamin Lara from ASTI discussed IPv6 in Open Source Software as part of the program.

Experts in different aspects and applications of Free/Open Source Software (FOSS) enlightened the audience about the role and importance of FOSS in their respective fields of specialization. Almost 500 students from different schools and universities attended the event.

The worldwide celebration aimed to educate the public about the benefits and advantages of using high quality FOSS in the most basic environments such as in home, office, education, business, and government. It was also a venue to promote and encourage the use of FOSS products.

The Software Freedom International coordinates all SFD celebrations worldwide. SFD was first celebrated in 2004 with over 70 teams participating.

Bayanihan Linux Team joins 3rd FOSS Week PDF Print E-mail

A week-long celebration was held at the Constitution Hills, Quezon City last September 13 to 15 in view of the celebration of the 3rd House of Representatives Free/Open Source Software (FOSS) Week. The Bayanihan Linux Team participated in the event to promote the use of Free and Open Source Software for home and office. Other organizations and groups also participated to advocate the use of FOSS in different aspects.

The congressional office of Rep. Teodoro “Teddy” Casino and the BayanMuna partylist spearheaded the event to support the continuous growth of FOSS community in the country. The week-long activity aimed to: 1) Promote FOSS as a better and equally viable alternative to existing proprietary software; 2) Showcase and introduce the legislators, congressional staff and employees to FOSS products and services useful for their personal and office needs; and 3) Gather support for the passage of House Bill 1011. Rep. Casino recently filed HB 1011, also known as FOSS Act of 2010, which mandates the use of FOSS and Open Standards in local government agencies and encourages the use of FOSS in both public and private sectors.

The event also served as a venue for the kick-off of the year-long advocacy “FOSS on the GO!”, a massive information dissemination campaign to create awareness and bring discussion about FOSS and HB 1011 among schools, business communities, government agencies, and industry players.

This activity is in line with the worldwide celebration of the Software Freedom Day on September 18, in which the Bayanihan Linux Team will also participate in.
